Laguna De Los Tres Trek


This is the first day of our trek in Patagonia. We drove from El Calafate to El Chalten, for a 2 hour drive, and pass through the steppes of Patagonia.

Shortly after we arrived, we were given our packed lunch for the day, and then a briefing by our guide, before we embarked on our most memorable trek in the beautiful and pristine Patagonia.

Patagonia is a region which covers part of Chile and Argentina. It is such a beautiful place with lovely shimmering lakes, and offers trekkers one of the most exceptional experience with little chance of getting mountain (or altitude) sickness. We trekked only up to about 1,000m.

El Chalten, is a small mountain village located in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. It is situated by the riverside of Rio De Las Vueltas, within the Los Glaciares National Park, at the base of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy mountains. It is the trekking capital of Patagonia, and existed solely for the people who come here for embarking on their trekking trip in the Patagonia. It is 220 km north of El Calafate.

El Chalten is named for Cerro Fitz Roy's Tehuelche name, meaning 'peak of fire' or 'smoking mountain.

In this post, I share with you some of the pictures that I took while on the trek.

We left our belongings behind, and took only our day pack as we are going to camp for two nights at Poincenot Camp.

                                           We started our trek here at El Chalten.

This is a permanent camp, which is taken care of by our trekking agency in Patagonia. So, the tents are all set up for the trekking season, and so after each group leaves, the tents are remain erected there. We have a dining tent, and one toilet. There is no bathing facilities here, but campers can easily just go to the river to wash up.

I am extremely happy with the fact that I was able to make 2 trips to South America this year.

In Jan/Feb, I went to Patagonia (Argentina & Chile) for trekking and then I made another
trip to Brazil and Peru, covering a few wonders of the World - visiting the Iguazu Falls, Machu
Picchu, the Amazon Forest as well as Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio De Janeiro.

In this gallery, I will showcase some of the best photos that I had taken on both of my trips. And I will add on more as I visit Ecuador, Bolivia and the rest of the countries!

Fly to Buenos Aires
Fly from Buenos Aires to EL Calafate.
Travel from El Calafate to El Chalten for about 2 hours.
Start the trek in the Argentinian side,
El Chalten - Lago De Los Tres - Lago Torre - Tumbado - El Chalten
Drive from El Chalten to Chile (Torre Del Paine National Park)
Lake Pehoe
Drive onwards to Puerto Natales.

Patagonia 

Antonio Pigafetta together with Ferdinand Magellan and his crew arrived in the Gulf of San Julian (Santa Cruz Province) in 1520. Some historians think that the immense footprints left by those Tehuelche hunters led Magellan to call them patagones, a deformation of pata gao, which means "big foot" in Portuguese. Others hold that the term derives from Pathafon, a character of the novel Primaleon, a favourite of the Portguese conquistador. For Magellan, those Indians seemed horrible to him, and thus he called the region "Big Foot country" or "Patagonia".
